Rainy day here in Berlin and between meeting friends we've holed ourselves up at a cafe in Prenzlauer with hot chocolate and this amazing book. Got on to Elizabeth Jane Howard after reading an article in the Guardian where Hilary Mantel said she was her favourite writer. Hilary being one of the writers I would like to one day BE, I took the recommendation seriously. What a delight. Marking Time is book two of the Cazalet Chronicles quartet about an English family before, during and after the war. Gentle plots but sharply observed characters, it's the kind of book which would have made a big noise if a man had written it but is largely underground thanks to the gender of the author.
