I went into a beautiful English language second hand bookstore to look for a present and wound up buying three books for myself. To be fair they were in the clearance €1 shelf and anyone who doesn't look there is a MONSTER. This was one of them, read in almost one day straight, about a Mississippi woman in the 1940s, her five children and the sudden arrival of her sixth, who happens to have Downs Syndrome. From there, the book becomes about finding a way for the little girl to have the best life but told between flashes to the woman (Jewel's) own life in a very cinematic sort of way so you can fully see it all unfold and get how growing for her child makes her grow as an adult too. A good book! Not high literature (some bits are either too pat or brushed away quickly) but engaging. #bookstagram #121in2021 #jewel #bretlott
