Photo story: lunch at Kochi's most famous toddy shop. (For its food. The most famous toddy shop for its toddy is elsewhere.) Traditionally toddy shop food evolved because people got super drunk and didn't want to eat anything so you had to make your food highly spiced and highly flavourful. We ordered karimeen pollichatu, fried prawns and three appams and those were PLENTY. Dad experimented with toddy but it wasn't for me, on such a hot day, just as well, because it was apparently not great. The food was terrific though. Later, they let me poke my head into the kitchen for a photo op, only me, because the kitchen was run entirely by women who were manning (sorry WOMANING) the large orders ably and in saris.
