What I'm Reading

In many ways this was a more complex layered book than Rebecca (have you read my Rebecca post yet? Link in bio or mrm.substack.com, it's the second post) but I raced through it just as fast. Began last night and would've finished last night also if I hadn't forced myself to slow down and really take it in. Several things I loved: the lack of certainty, was there a villain or wasn't there, is love really so destructive? Descriptions of gorgeous large estates in Cornwall. The nurturing relationship that can exist between two men that we rarely read about beyond a father-son context. And finally, the dialogue: I loved our cousin Rachel slowly and then suddenly, as much as the narrator did. Du Maurier was a genius, even if she was dismissed somewhat in her time for her "popular" fiction. Now I'll go back and read the spoiler-filled introduction of my copy.
