Why I love The Sound Of Music:
1) High on a hill was a lonely goatherd, lay odeley odelay-ee-oo.
2) Playclothes! With curtains!
3) The bit when he's all getting a crush on her and she looks sort of haughty and stands up to him and then he smiles and man, Christopher Plummer is a HOTTIE. What other movies has he done? Is he dead? Can I have his babies? (the haughty hottie. mmmmmmmm)
5) The way the nuns all bitch about Maria, but they do it so musically that you almost wish that they'd call you a moonbeam too.
6) Discovering that as an adult I like different parts from when I was a kid. For instance, none of us (except my mom) very clearly remembered the Nazi bit. After the wedding everything seemed sorta blurry. And I always thought the Nazis wanted to kill Captain Von Trapp not make him join them which confused me later coz if she's coming from a convent, how come he's Jewish?
7) Tea, a drink with jam and bread! And that will bring us back to do-oh-oh.
8) Oh and the Baroness. I totally felt sorry for her. Even though she made Maria leave the first time. She loved Georg! Awww.
9) Christopher Plummer is HOT. Have I already said that? Damn.
10) There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall and the bells in the steeeeeeeeeeple too! And up in the nursery an absurd little bird is popping out to say (everybody!) CUCKOO!
We wondered last night whether boys had seen the movie too, whether it was as seminal a classic to them as it was to us. I voted yes, but the other two weren't entirely sure.
- eM hates to go and leave this pretty si-ight.
oh boy, listened to the music on ol' LPs and cassettes long before I could catch the movie when the first VCRs came around in the 1980s... Makes me feel so oldddddddddddd
ReplyDeleteHey..I liked the Nazi bits...most entertaining.....
ReplyDelete"Perhaps those who would warn you that the Anschluss is coming - and it is coming, Captain - perhaps they would get further with you by setting their words to music."
"If the Nazis take over Austria, I have no doubt, Herr Zeller, that you will be the entire trumpet section."
why do u say life's boring? there's so much to do now - opportunity at every corner.
ReplyDeletei was a bit puzzled to read ur outlook article.
and it is still cool to hv thums up in a market place where i come from :-)
I used to watch it at my friends house during school hols(v didnt have a VCR...20 yrs back:-p). Like u said the Nazi bit makes sense now.
ReplyDeleteI've got it for my kids. They love the songs & are full of respect for me coz i can sing almost all the songs without looking at the subtitles:-D
I never got to watching the movie, although I have the complete soundtrack. My favourite song is, The Hills are Alive.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, partying makes you anti-social? That's a new one!
The suuuuuuunnnnnn has gooooooooone to bed and so must I...
ReplyDelete"Why am I always last?"
"Because you are the most important."
"But they're children!"
"Yes, and I'm their father!"
Maria sitting on the pinecone, ooh, and the part when she and the Captain dance at his party. And Edelweiss, when they all sing together for the first time, for the Baroness. "I would have brought my harmonica."
Could go on for a while, clearly, Easily on my top-five list of all-time.

I did have something to say, but then now I'd rather not. :)
A most wonderful movie. And since I own the dvd I may watch the movie today! "Edelweiss" and "My favourite things" and all the other super songs, the awsome cinematography - the movie opens with this mind blowing panaromic view of the mountains, and ofcourse the inimitable Julia Andrews. Glad to know that not all fans of the movie are kids!
ReplyDeletepossibly a large number of boys/men have seen the film in their childhood (as I did). but whether they think it's a seminal classic..
ReplyDeletesome might.
What nostalgia! Feel like renting the video and seeing it all over again. Yes, maybe I will.
ReplyDeleteYour confessions back are getting less day by day! DO somethng..
ReplyDeleteBtw.. nice post!
You do know what Goatherds do all up on the mountain on their own don't you? ;-)
ReplyDeleteJust one point.
ReplyDeleteWhat you have described isn't Anti Social.
It is just asocial.
The two mean different things.
It used to be a seminal classic and my favouritestest musical, but that was until I discovered "Singin in the Rain"!
ReplyDeleteCC,
ReplyDeleteI usually never do this, the pimp-my-blog bit, i mean. But your take on the 'Sound Of Music' brought back so many old memories about the movie and the following post was written after yet another of those watchings.

Is it ok to say that i cant watch SOM without 'n' number of tearlets dropping down my face? Irrespective of how many times i have seen the movie? Well, i did that anyways. thanks for the post.
"Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings.
"snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes,
silver white winters that melt into springs...
Seriously, does words get anymore beautiful than these?
One chick-flick rom-com festival coming right up. This weekend? Dosas thrown in if it's a Saturday.

the melody was too good!! too good....
btw, have you heard the version Julie Andrews sang recently at some do??
ReplyDeleteshe modified it a bit to reflect her age... am hunting for the soundtrack or video.. but have drawn a blank!!
You may have seen CP in "The Thornbirds." He was the Archbishop. Then again, you may have not, considering the presence of the divine Richard Chamberlain aka Ralph Raoul, Cardinal de Bricassart.
ReplyDeleteCP was also in "The Inside Man". Where once again he was unfortunately eclipsed by the delicious Clive Owen.
btw, years and years ago, I read the autobiography of Maria Von Trapp, titled obviously "The Sound of Music." MOST entertaining. Unfortunately I never found a copy in a bookstore that I could buy. Read it if you can. No one in my living memory or acquaintance seems to have read it.
n!
I loved the movie too.I am 18.
ReplyDeleteI loved julie andrews ,u forgot her totally. She was hot. :)
My mom had seen it too when she was young too.She says there is a Satyajit Ray film on a similar 'maid to mistress' theme.
Dont remeber the name though.
Proud owner of a special edition DVD, thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I must say that it took John Coltrane to show me the full potential of My Favorite Things. And a little digging discloses that the real Maria von Trapp was something of an egotistic bitch.
Can't blame the ol' firm of O&R for that, though.
hey there, landed onto your blog from some other and cudnt but feel notsalgic after reading what u've written about sound of music.this used to be my fav movie when i was a kid..well kind of liked most famous musicals like wiz of oz, chitty chitty etc, and remember the fights wud have with my brother whenever i would watch these. he hated musicals.aah the good old days
