My latest book is The One Who Swam With The Fishes.

"A mesmerizing account of the well-known story of Matsyagandha ... and her transformation from fisherman’s daughter to Satyavati, Santanu’s royal consort and the Mother/Progenitor of the Kuru clan." - Hindustan Times

"Themes of fate, morality and power overlay a subtle and essential feminism to make this lyrical book a must-read. If this is Madhavan’s first book in the Girls from the Mahabharata series, there is much to look forward to in the months to come." - Open Magazine

"A gleeful dollop of Blytonian magic ... Reddy Madhavan is also able to tackle some fairly sensitive subjects such as identity, the love of and karmic ties with parents, adoption, the first sexual encounter, loneliness, and my favourite, feminist rage." - Scroll

A guest post from The Cat, Esq.

So there's been so much fuss about this Sockington fellow, I told my Legs that I wanted to write something also. Legs has been busy lately, and hasn't had much time to write (or to cuddle) recently, so I figured if it wasn't for me, this blog would just fall apart. Right? Right. Of course I'm not modest. Why should I be? Firstly, I have it made, and I bet more than you do. I get fed and watered when I want, I play nighttime games, I sleep all day. It's a good life, for anyone. Besides which, I am handsome, charming and with a set of whiskers that would put anyone to shame. AND clearly, I have a great grasp on the English language. I'm pretty much bilingual. Legs calls me Motu Singh (which I do not appreciate, but hey, she's okay about other stuff) and The Cook Lady in the morning likes to talk to me in Marathi. I respond when I feel like it.

The other day, I overheard Legs and THIS MAN WHO HAS APPEARED FROM NOWHERE talking about making me comfortable in a new home. I'm all WTF? What is this new home and why have I not been consulted previously? Legs noticed how upset I looked and tried to tell me that it was this awesome place--huge and airy with many cupboards and windows for a cat to curl up in AND my own toilet, plus I don't have to contribute to the rent. But still. No one ever asks the cat anything. And THIS MAN WHO HAS APPEARED FROM NOWHERE. Okay, so he feeds me when I climb on top of his head and yowl at him. But he has made one or two rude gestures at me and it hurts my feelings. And Legs lets him get away with so much! She is too lenient sometimes.

Legs has been sort of stressed lately though. I think it's a combination of how much money she's going to have to spend on the move, and this dreadful weather. As long as I get my regular feeds, I'm really okay. I think Legs 2 and Legs 3 are going to miss me also. Not to mention The Cook Lady. They've all been saying, "Oh TC, we'll be so LOST without you around to be the man in the house!" and I'm all, "Yes, obviously, you wouldn't know what to do without me." I am a smart cat. THIS MAN WHO HAS APPEARED FROM NOWHERE (although he seems vaguely familiar) better not try and take my place.

Anyway, enough about Legs. Let's talk about me. Have I told you how much fun it is hunting cockroaches? They hide under the sink, but ha ha! I catch them and chase them and bite them and crunch them and cockroaches are yummy. I leave a few in Legs' room for, you know, a midnight snack, but she just gets the broom and sweeps them out and I'm like DEWD YOU ARE WASTING FOOD. And then she says, "Bad cat!" and I look stonily at her.

It is hot. I must go to the window and nap now. Goodbye, other Legs people.

Note from "Legs": Regular blogging resumes next week, as soon as the busy stuff is over!

  4. The cat is brilliant. A perfect post from the cat perspective... exactly how cats behave. I think my kittens think of me also the one who makes chicken, my flatmate as the breakfast giver and her boyfriend as the one who plays with them...

your cat is quite a good looking fellow.

  5. TC, why're you holding back? I know cats are territorial, and it's pretty obvious you feel much more strongly about having to move. So why aren't you saying exactly what you feel? Are you afraid of hurting Legs's feelings?

Sweet dreams. Watch out for that Mumbai heat :)

  15. Obviously nobody in this blog understands subtle sarcasm.

The operative word(s) in the anon comment - Obviously this gets filed under 'Posts I think are funny' - being 'I think'.

  18. heya TC
my dog looks a bit like a cat and is irresistibly and inexplicably drawn to felines. his name is bono and when I read your post to him he was totally wowed by your superior command of the english language (bono is part chinese and part alien). so anyway he insisted that I convey his admiration and a friendly wag...no licks because he understands that cats mostly prefer to lick themselves. while i'm at it, here's a virtual scratch for your tummy too - because I know everyone likes THAT, no matter what species they belong to.

  25. I don't like cats. In fact I can't stand them. My family loves them, though, so at any given point of time, we've a Fat Tabby and her recent litter. Boo!

But yes, I don't mind them at all in books. And blogs. Awesome post. \m/
