My latest book is The One Who Swam With The Fishes.

"A mesmerizing account of the well-known story of Matsyagandha ... and her transformation from fisherman’s daughter to Satyavati, Santanu’s royal consort and the Mother/Progenitor of the Kuru clan." - Hindustan Times

"Themes of fate, morality and power overlay a subtle and essential feminism to make this lyrical book a must-read. If this is Madhavan’s first book in the Girls from the Mahabharata series, there is much to look forward to in the months to come." - Open Magazine

"A gleeful dollop of Blytonian magic ... Reddy Madhavan is also able to tackle some fairly sensitive subjects such as identity, the love of and karmic ties with parents, adoption, the first sexual encounter, loneliness, and my favourite, feminist rage." - Scroll

What I'm Reading

Just finished this, becrumbed with flakes from the chicken patty I got for tea, what an indulgent Saturday. This book was recommended to me by an algorithm, the "new better Goodreads" a website called The Story Graph, which takes what you're in the mood for, and your reading history and tosses up recommendations. Kintu was on top of the list and I bought it because I love long sprawling tales that make the historical personal. And also what I knew about Uganda could fit on the head of a pin, and now I know so much more, so easily. The names took a while for my Eurocentric brain to be able to tell apart and the author doesn't offer translations for words so you have to use context clues but it was an incredible book, spanning decades and madness and history and all these offshoots of one family and their own personal stories before it ties up in one knot at the end again. I loved it and now I'm already looking for more African literature to read. Give suggestions? #kintu #jennifernansubugamakumbi #uganda #bookstagram #mrmbookclub #120in2020
