A life update and stuff I WOULDN'T do, even if you made me 'Queen For The Day'

I've been sitting at home for the past two days, getting terribly bored and morbidly depressed. When you're lying in bed there isn't much to do except read and think. (I got sick of watching television after a while). A couple of friends have come over to see me, but they came at night and left swiftly. I've been playing Sims 2 like a maniac, and you'll be happy to know that one of my Sims has reached the platinum level. (Gosh, I'm such a nerd!) My net was down all of yesterday which sort of added to the depression AND to make matters worse, my cellphone bill arrived yesterday. *Sigh*

But today, today I will go to work. Which means that instead of wearing shorts like I have been, I'm going to have to force my plaster into my jeans.

There really isn't much to blog about, so instead I shall share with you an email I have recieved. I get quite a few emails these days, on my blogs email address too, many more than I get in my "real-life" id. Anyway, to protect this guy, I'm not going to share his name or email id, but if he's reading this, I guess this would suffice as a reply, no?

Hi,
I like your style. U r so readable and your writing is full of humour, makes one feel light in the head and if one ruminates about it later, one feels a bit sad. I think u r missing out on something and u do not know what. So the eternal search goes on and on.
Right okay, Zen Master. Any more words of wisdom?

There r many more like u out there. I dont blame them. It is the age and time we live in that makes us so. I think u should let go of yurself and enter into a relationship instead of gong in for one night stands and casual sex. U cant say "NO" i can make it out.
Just saying 'no' has always been a problem for me. What an insightful guy!

So, what if i proposition u now? I am sure u wont say no. But the problem is i live in Bombay and u in delhi but we can build a relationship nevertheless. If interested, please respond, but not in your journalese, be a bit more formal, candid and serious.
Bye baby.
Um. Um. I'm sorry if my blog gives the impression to ANYONE that I would be willing to sleep with them. Coz I'm not gonna, you know. And yeah, of course, Mr. Anon, your being in Bombay IS the ONLY reason I wouldn't accept your kind offer. Even though it's sad, and we could most definitely "build a relationship". Even though your lack of grammar totally turns me on, revealing the maverick in you. Who needs to type out y. o. u when you can just say 'u'? Oh well, shit happens.
What exactly is my "journalese" by the way? Anyone? No, but since he's asked me to be "formal, candid and serious", here goes:

Dear Mr. Loser,
I'm sorry, but I have to decline your proposition. Better luck next time.
And yeah, DON'T call me baby.
Regards,
eM

Why are all the crazy people in the world drawn to this site? No, really, WHY???? Is it some kind of "crazy meter" or something that I've set off unknowingly? If you guys have any insight about this, please let me know.
Oh yeah, and henceforth emails should be sent keeping in mind this disclaimer.

1) I have a real life.
2) I might post your mail or refer to it on this blog.
3) Hate/junk mail will be deleted, pronto.
4) I cannot be guaranteed to respond.
5) I WILL NOT sleep with you, your brother or your dog. In fact, if you ask me, I will in all likelihood, make fun of you here.

There we go. Happy emailing, folks. :)

  4. Hey eM,

    I write in solidarity, comrade!

I have been reading your blog for sometime and I do like your journalese as whatshisname put it.

When you are female/young/single(or even not for that matter)/good looking(again, not necessary)/independent/open about the birds and bees and have a fairly liberal take on life, then you, like me and plenty of other smart/witty/strong women out there will constantly have men like whatshisname assume that we will sleep with them.

whatshisname - you suck, big time. I mean really grow the fuck up!

  12. To the people whose comments I have deleted, YOU are the reason women in this country cannot express themselves freely, YOU are the reason the Dhaula Kuan rape happened because you think people who dress a certain way or talk a certain way are always "ready for it" and if they choose to say no, you get indignant and take by force. You sicken and disgust me and about a million other women. Gah.

And to answer Anonymous' comment (the last one) I may not be able to change this city or this country, but on my blog, I have the freedom to delete whatever I feel like. Let's not forget at the end of the day, it's MY blog, my space to say what I feel like and not be condemned for it. While I love a good argument and if a point of view is presented that is different from my own, I am willing to accept it. But I will not accept abuse, I will not accept taunts and I will not welcome random shitheads who want to tell me how to live my life. Don't presume you know me because you read this--because you SO don't.

  14. Ms.

I never cast any aspersions on your character. Like I said before, I only sought to point out what might have been lost in this frenzy of hate. The guy never propositioned sex. And I never said that him propositioning for sex would've been right.

And, that you suggest that people like me are responsible for rapes - that's just downright offensive. I'll have you know that I have a very healthy respect for women. I have a mother and sister at home. I pray to female dieties. I have very dear women friends. You took my comment out of context and twisted it into something offensive and vulgar. That reeks of the same rapist's logic that you so seem to detest.

All I had said that the guy was probably trying to be sympathetic. And you ripped him apart for that. For probably being kind in a stupid way.

    That said, I agree:
    1. It's your life.
    2. You choose how to live your life.
    3. No one gets to tell you how to life it.

But I will also say this:
    1. That which gives you the write to air opinion about "losers", gives me the right to air mine.
    2. That which gives you the right to tell someone to "get a life", gives me the right to SUGGEST to you that kindness might be a good thing.

Heh... and as far as taunts go, if you're willing to dish them out, maybe you should be willing to take them? But, I'll apologize. I shouldn't have done that. (I'm assuming you're talking about the grammar comment).

And - yes - dont presume you know my character just by reading two bits of what I write (AND reading it wrong). DONT call me a rapist just because I choose to think before I yell.

I will not comment on your blog again, if you wish that I not do so.

    'Nuff said.

  15. Agree with bee. Hate to make generalizations, but the typical indian male has an unhealthy fascination with independent liberated women. Besides, this blog almost has celebrity status. I don't see where he asked you for sexual favors, though.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Okay since NO ONE sees it, let me reproduce: So, what if i proposition u now? I am sure u wont say no.
If "proposition" means lets-fall-in-love-and-have-two-babies, then my sincerest apologies. From my limited experience, it means only "lets-get-some"

    ReplyDelete
  17. Fair enough. "Propositioning" is definitely sexual in nature. And in any case, he creeped you out, so you have every right.
To anon: Ask all your women friends how they would feel about getting a mail of this nature. However sympathetic and stupidly kind it may sound to you, it is not innocuous. Behavior that has sexual undertones and makes someone uncomfortable is sexual harassment.

    ReplyDelete
  18. To Anon: Adding to what FinGeek said - Quote: Ask all your women friends how they would feel .... End Quote. I suggest you also ask your sister how she would feel. Granted you have the right to express your opinion, but NOT on someone else's blog if they don't want you to.

To anyone who might still be thinking that eM is mistaken that the author of the email propositioned sex : A definition of the word "proposition" on www.dictionary.com - An offer of a private bargain, especially a request for sexual relations. And we women have a pretty good intuition about these things - I would say eM is not mistaken.

eM : I totally agree with you. (...YOU are the reason women in this country cannot express themselves freely,....) I am one of those women who have been the target of this kind of mentality and who are disgusted with this attitude. Enough already!

  21. Ooooooh, goodie, a cyber war! :)

I think people who are accusing eM of being whatever should remember:

o that she had the decency of not revealing the guy's name. She could have, you know.

o that it is her blog, and if you don't like what she writes, or don't agree with it, go to www.gnu.org.

o that in this post, she has also mentioned breaking her sims 2 record (I guess it is some sort of a game), and other things too. Then why pick up one portion and judge her based on that?

And whoever thinks that eM and women like her are the reasons this country is going to dogs, I have the following set of questions for you:

    i) How is being open about sexuality a worse crime than, say, siphoning off crores of Rs. intended for creating roads? When you drive to your office, or take a bus, and it takes you 45 minutes for a 2 km ride, eM is not the reason for that. Some corrupt official is.

ii) Anon: How does praying to female deities make you open minded about women? Open minded is accepting that a woman has a right to say no. Watch "accused", brother.

iii) Where and when exactly did you last see you life?

    Angry young male.

  23. Wow ! I take off for a day, and see what I've missed...

As someone said, being a celebrity (in our little blog world) has its downsides. People assume they know you, when they don't. Creeps like that, need to be told off real quick.

Creeps like Anon over here, who much to my disbelief, actually used female deities in his argument, I don't know what to do with. They are all over the place, crawling through the woodwork. I really am at a loss for words here...

Take care of that foot. And hold onto the plaster cast. It might come in handy one of these days, with some anonymous commentors ;)

  24. This is great fun! Thank you guys :) I don't know whether any of you noticed, but anonymous comments have now been disabled . *sigh* It's the end of an era I tell you!!!
But, other stuff, I went to work, attempted to go again today and was ordered to stay home. So I suppose new Sims records will be broken.
I tried not to get too angry, but attitudes like these astound me. I've HEARD about them sure, but I never thought I'd meet them face-to-face. (Or blog-to-blog).
But again, thanks to the rest of you for making me aware that there are nice people to balance out the crazies. (Jay, you fall in the "nice people", okay? Don't get mad!)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hmmm.
You know, I thought I'd keep my mouth shut. But after being called a "creep", and whatever else not, I think I have to say what I need to say.

You quoted the guy. Here's what you skipped over:
But the problem is i live in Bombay and u in delhi but we can build a relationship nevertheless.

And, people, like I said, before you get personal, step back and think.

Vignesh - what exactly is wrong with using female deities in an argument? I just meant to say that I see women in a different light because I do. Eh, I dont think you'd understand though. And - please refrain from threatening physical violence. Because if you desire it, I'm willing to take you up on it.

Grafxgrl - I have nothing to say to you. You obviously have a few years of growing up to do. :) That wasn't meant as offense. You really do amuse me the way kids do.

    ReplyDelete
  28. And in the interest of keeping this in perspective and balanced:

ii) Anon: How does praying to female deities make you open minded about women? Open minded is accepting that a woman has a right to say no. Watch "accused", brother.

It doesn't make me "open minded" about anything. Not what you call "open minded" anyways. It does make me respect them, though. You have to be Hindu, and devoutly so to understand it. I have never in my life ogled a girl, whistled at a girl or said "क्या चीज़ है रे!!". I've never derided women, even only in the company of close male friends. So there.

And - I dont learn my life lessons from movies. So I wont watch whatever you want me to watch.

iii) Where and when exactly did you last see you life?

I see it everyday. Which is why I have learned to be patient and read between the lines. Which is why I have realized that every human being is good at the core. That all you have to do is give someone a chance.

Those of you looking up dictionaries - there are multiple meanings listed.

That said, the argument here never was about my character or about my respect for women. It was about what the guy intended to say. And what he intended to say is pretty obvious, to me atleast, from what he said - "build a relationship". I can understand this girl's indignation. But like I said before, I only sought to point out what might have gone unnoticed in this flow of emotion.

    1. My sister - she has been the object of unwanted advances. She didn't cry rape though. Neither did she call the guy a "loser". She politely declined. And I'm proud of her.
    2. I have as much right to express anything as you do. I mean, it just makes sense - doesn't it? How are you any different that I am?
    3. Like I said, I will stop posting here. All she has to do is say so.

PS: Sorry for the multiple posts. I write in reaction. And I hadn't read all comments. I took them as they came.

  30. Dude, A noname whatever. In my defense, (though why I should be defending myself from some stranger who has evidently been checking updates on the comments every hour on the hour is beyond me). I never said this emailer was out for rape or whatever. What I was objecting to was your patriachal attitude, which you evidently cannot see. Whatever. Have a nice life, it's too hot and I don't care enough to argue with you.

    ReplyDelete
  31. And - please refrain from threatening physical violence. Because if you desire it, I'm willing to take you up on it.

ROTFLMAO ! That was priceless dude. Yup, devout Hindu all right ! You obviously didn't get the ';)' at the end of that statement !

The problem lies in using the fact that you worship female deities as a point against your attitude. Its the same attitude that makes people look upon the sexual harassment of today's world, and say, yeah she deserved it. From the way you talk about the women around you, it seems to me that you would be the first to condem the slightest infraction of what you hold to be high virtue. That was what at the heart of this whole debate.

All of us can read in between the lines as well as you can. The implied 'proposition' was so apparent, that most of us didn't even take a second glance, or even try to read in between the lines. One does not, when one sees what is obvious. But I guess it takes one to know one. And you apparently really 'know' the guy who wrote that email.

    ReplyDelete
  32. updates on the comments every hour on the hour
Mornings and evenings, and the occasional break I take from work. Not "every hour".

I never said this emailer was out for rape or whatever.
You didn't call him a rapist? Didn't you say people like him (and me) instigate it?

    patriachal attitude
    No. Just common sense.

Yup, devout Hindu all right ! You obviously didn't get the ';)' at the end of that statement !
That I'm Hindu doesn't mean I am going to subjugate my manhood. If you say you're going to beat me up, I'm going to say I'm going to beat you up. Period. And, if you think Hinduism is synonymous with non-violence, you're mistaken. You've just been misled by Gandhi and his ilk.
I DID see the ';)' - and it was anything BUT benign. No threat of violence is ever. And especially not in this situation, where emotions obvioulsy run deep. (Would you call me a "creep" if you didn't mean it?)

it seems to me that you would be the first to condem the slightest infraction of what you hold to be high virtue
It only seems that way to you maybe beacause you are "open minded"? And then, I never said I worship them for their "virtue". Did I? I read this article (all 27 pages) a couple of months ago, about the Panchakanyas, and their "virtue". Most of that article made sense to me. I see the point in those women deciding to exercise their judgement as they see fit. I have no problem with women wearing what they want to wear. I have no problem with women drinking or smoking. I have no problem with women sleeping with whoever they please to. I have no more problem than I would have with men doing the same things. That is their life and their decisions, not mine. I do have a problem with a hundred people getting together to put a one person (man or woman) down, in this case, for what he probably meant to be empathy. I DO have a problem with unjustified unkindness. (And why? Because his grammar was wrong? Because he didn't quote Shakespeare?)

The implied 'proposition' was so apparent
Like I said in an earlier comment, read his email in its ENTIRETY. He may have said that she wasn't saying "no" enough... but that was his perception - flawed maybe - but just that perception. His intentions, though, he made pretty clear later in that email.

or even try to read in between the lines
Exactly my point. But then, you dont even need to here. He states pretty clearly what he seeks.

when one sees what is obvious
Heh. But you see, you're CHOOSING to see a certain thing. Then again, it could just be the world you live in, or the company you keep.

And you apparently really 'know' the guy who wrote that email.
No. And if you're insinuating that I'm him, no. I haven't read this girl's blog before this post.

AGAIN, what I'm bothered about here is this preemptive witch-hunt.... without caring really for what was really said. There seems to be no logic to what's happening here. Can you say mass hysteria?

Like this girl said - this argument is going to be no more than just that - argument.
And, Ms. eM, though it may seem to you like I'd care - I dont care if you (not to suggest that you would) dance on bar tables in underwear in an alcohol induced haze. I really don't. I'm not a mullah. I'm not the VHP. I'm not Bajrang Dal. But if someone were wanting to take advantage of you in that state - believe me or not - I WILL step in to help (you, not the perpetrator). But, if you, of your own sane and free will decided to copulate with some random stranger, I'd leave it to you and your judgement (maybe offer you advice if you were a friend). And no, I wouldn't judge you for that. Not any more than I'd judge a man. So, you (and the rest of your friends), please dont slander my character anymore.

'Nuff said. Fare ye well, Ms. eM (and everyone else). Peace.

I really don't. I'm not a mullah. I'm not the VHP. I'm not Bajrang Dal. But if someone were wanting to take advantage of you in that state - believe me or not - I WILL step in to help (you, not the perpetrator)." sounds incredibly wierd, as if you have fantasies of wearing your underwear over your trousers and make like superman. 35. Finally..FINALLY...you listen to my sage advice and disable the anonymous comment thingie. Next step, young padawan, is when you discover the 'Delete Comment' thing. Just the thought of how little effort it takes you to remove these mountains of hatespeech (three clicks, I think) will bring you many an evil smile in the future.
Also, people, if youre going to set up fake identities to carry on the hatespeech, pick a half-decent name.... A Noname Moose? Please.

    ReplyDelete
  36. of course, it could also be a phrase, if slightly badly spelt.

A No-name Moos: The Pent-Up Angst of a Nameless Cow.

    ReplyDelete
  37. NB: Ms. eM - all you have to say is "Dont post here", and I'll stop.

... I'm doing this only because I value my character as much as a woman would hers ...

also.. may i dig your grave for you?
Maybe in another sixty years, young'un. But that doesn't mean I will lay in it :)

    *sweet smile*
    *pats grafxgurl on the head*

    set up fake identities
And you are the Real Thing? "Samit Das" tells me who you are?
And I didn't set this ID up to post here. I created this ID over two weeks ago to write my two blogs.

of course, it could also be a phrase, if slightly badly spelt
I wouldn't go through so much trouble to parse my ID. There are bigger issues at hand.
Nor would I think too much before setting one up. It is spelt EXACTLY like I intended it to.

    carry on the hatespeech
I have been called a "shithead", a "creep", an instigator of rape, a "rapist", a 21 year old imp made references to my sphincter and you called me a "cow".
I've been threatened to be beaten up with a plaster cast, and the aforementioned 21 year old offered to dig my grave.
And then you made fun of my spelling and my mental abilities.
If you'll scroll up and read, I have never gotten personal with anyone. The one time I made an unkind remark about Ms. eM's grammar, I apologized. (Then again, it wasn't a jab, it was more an expression of amusement at how everything works out in the grand scheme of things).
Hatespeech? Yes. From me? No. I dont hate. That I'll leave for those who are good at it.
If I had wanted to indulge in hatespeech, I'd have said to you, "Stay to the point, you gender-confused imbecile."
(Because the way you argue reminds me of drag queens on Jerry Springer. I can almost see that wave of the hand and the swish of hips as you say "... A Noname Moose? please".) But, then again, maybe that wouldn't be "hatespeech". "Colorful inference", maybe, but not "hatespeech".
And, son, before you can be a Jedi, you will have to learn to be a man first.
I did get personal this time. Everyone is allowed their one little luxury. And then again, it was warranted.

as if you have fantasies of wearing your underwear over your trousers and make like superman
Where I come from, doing what I would is called common decency. Even normal humans would do that.
And the point I was trying to make there was that I would not sit back and say "She deserves it.".
AGAIN - the argument is not about me or my character - the argument is about what that email means.

For a chap who says he is non-judgemental, you seem pass judgements at will
Where did I say I was non-judgemental? I said, "I will not judge you anymore than I would a man".
And as far as VHP/Bajrang Dal/radical-mullahs go, you only have to read the news.

why go into the mumbo jumbo of reading between lines and the fact that he wants to build relationships etc
Because anything else only conforms to the jump-to-conclusions, women-who-dress-vulgar-deserve-rape non-logic.
Or, do you believe that women should be measured differently than we do men? If so, why?
And, like I have said, I do not condone rape. Not for ANY reason. And Ma'm, thanks for not getting personal and for staying (mostly) to the point.

we have people who come up with fantastic logic to put down and discourage people like eM.
Logic, Ma'm, is never "fantastic". Logic by definition is explainable. Hysteria, on the other hand, is fantastic.
And if you meant to say MY logic is "fantastic", I'll ask you how. I only drew valid inferences from (all of) what was presented.
And I did not discourage anyone from doing anything. I only SUGGESTED that maybe she should stop and think.
And then everyone decided I was an threat to humanity, started calling me names, and this degenerated into what this has become.

And then you have the GALL to complain about a witchunt!!!!!
Ah, but it is. Maybe you dont see it because of your (justified) bias, but it is.
I am NOT talking about your experiences in the bus/train/office/public. I am talking about THIS ONE email.
That you choose to call anything other than crying rape, "mumbo jumbo", proves it. If you read that email
carefully, in its entirety, untainted by the passion of this discussion, you will see that the guy is trying to be sympathetic, and offering to "help".
Maybe STUPIDLY so, but not lustfully or maliciously. What happens in buses/trains/offices/public/elsewhere/in-other-email is a whole other discussion.
If Ms. eM had said, "He said that I sleep around without knowing everything there is to know about me.", I'd have seen the point, because he does.
But to say, "He wants to have sex with me", just doesn't make sense. And it makes even less sense to say he's out for rape or sexual harrassment.
Is every unsolicited advance the first step to rape? Are men not allowed to make the first move?

  38. You want me to say it? *sigh* Okay, fine I'll say it.
Ano name Moose, please go away. Please. Don't bother leaving any more comments defending yourself, I really don't care about your viewpoint, I thought perhaps I did, but I don't since you have lived up to my worst expectations. And I totally hate you for making me do this, because I NEVER stop commenters. Okay, now, please go. Quietly.
